How a Silicone Emulsion is Made
A silicone emulsion is an insoluble silicone oil dispersed in water with the help of an emulsifier.silicone emulsion It is used in a wide variety of applications, such as cosmetics, paints, and coatings. It can also be applied as a release agent, defoamer, and water repellent. It can also be formulated as an antistatic agent, and is available in many different viscosities. In addition, it can be used as a mold release and is highly resistant to high temperatures and oxidation.
Silicone emulsions can be manufactured by emulsion polymerization or mechanical emulsification.silicone emulsion In mechanical emulsification, the silicone is mixed with surfactants and a small amount of water under high shear to form a non-Newtonian fluid with much higher viscosity than the pure silicone. This is then emulsified with a larger quantity of water to form the final emulsion. These emulsions can be anionic, cationic or non-ionic.
The emulsion is then passed through a dilution mixer (10) where the concentration of the emulsion can be adjusted as needed by varying the amount of water added. The dilution mixer can also be used to add any other ingredients that may be needed for the final formulation, such as thickeners, preservatives and antifoam. The resulting emulsion is then transferred into the homogenizer vessel (14) where it is stabilized for at least 10 minutes to ensure that the emulsion remains stable and free of additives.
If a catalyst is needed for the emulsion production, it can be fed through line (3) and premixed with the polysiloxane in the dilution mixer. Alternatively, the catalyst can be added directly to the polysiloxane in the premixer, where there is less risk of reaction with the reactive emulsion.
Once the emulsion is stable, it can be packaged for shipment and distribution. A wide range of packaging materials can be used, such as glass bottles, jars, and plastic containers. The emulsion can also be stored in a wide range of temperatures, from very cold to ambient. It is generally packaged with a protective barrier to prevent degradation by environmental factors such as sunlight and air.
Silicone emulsions are a versatile and cost-effective product that can be used in many different applications. They can be purchased in a high percentage solid version, which is then diluted with water prior to use, to reduce transport costs and storage space requirements. These emulsions can protect surfaces from damage by abrasion, friction and molding, as well as corrosion. They can also be formulated to provide lubrication and improve the life of products such as electronic devices, machinery and textiles. In addition, they are safe for the environment and can be easily cleaned from surfaces. They can also be formulated with added preservatives to extend microbiological stability for over 6 months. These properties make them a valuable product in many industries. They are commonly used to provide abrasion, friction and molding protection for machines and equipment, as a release agent for moulded parts, and in cosmetics such as shampoos and creams.
